A simple sketch. A more useful estimate.

Sketch the worktop runs as simple shapes and label them A, B and C. Draw an island separately. Include tall cabinets, doorways and windows if they affect the layout. A legible hand drawing is more useful than a polished drawing with missing information.

Use millimetres consistently and write the unit at the top of the page. If something is uncertain, write “approximate” next to it instead of guessing a precise-looking number.

For an existing kitchen, note the visible length and depth of each run. Mark corners and any curves, angled sections or changes in depth. For a new kitchen, use the latest designer’s plan and identify its revision date.

Describe an island with its overall length and width, plus any intended seating overhangs or waterfall ends. Ask us to confirm feasibility and support before fixing those dimensions as part of the final design.

• Show the approximate sink, hob and tap positions.
• List appliance and sink model numbers when available.
• Mark which edges will be visible.
• Identify upstands, splashbacks and vertical end panels.
• Note any changes from the current layout.

Do not attempt to measure hidden cut-outs by dismantling appliances or lifting stone. Use model details and leave the necessary dimensions to be established at templating.

Take a wide photograph of the kitchen and a few views of the route into it. Explain any stairs, narrow turns, restricted parking or upper-floor location. These details help us decide what further assessment is needed.

For a replacement, mention loose cabinets, previous water damage or awkward existing joints. An early description is more useful than discovering the issue after a surface has been selected.
